Each year Rice honors members of the Rice community who have served the
students through outstanding teaching, dedication, and service. Congratulations to sociology professor Bridget Gorman- recipient of the Presidential Award for Mentoring, sociology professor Rachel Kimbro- recipient of the Duncan Award, and anthropology professor Jeff Fleisher- recipient of the Sarah Burnett Teaching Prize.
Nine faculty received the 2017 George R. Brown Award for Superior
Teaching, which honors top Rice instructors as determined by the votes
of alumni who graduated within the past two, three and five years. Congratulations to Sandra Parsons, assistant teaching professor in psychology, for receiving the award.
The Kinder Foundation has awarded a $10.7 million grant to Rice
University’s Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) to expand its
innovative work to additional school districts in the Greater Houston
region. HERC is a research-practice partnership between Rice and the Houston
Independent School District (HISD) that aims to improve the connection
between education research and decision-making.
Economics professor James Brown is to be honored with the top teaching prize, the George R. Brown Prize for Excellence in Teaching, at the annual teaching awards ceremony. The prize is awarded on the basis of surveys of Rice alumni who graduated two, three and five years ago. Professor Brown still remembers the moment that inspired his decision to become a teacher.
