Douglas S. Harlan Program in State Elections, Campaigns, and Politics

The goal of the Harlan program is to provide resources and easy-to-access information on state politics and policymaking. The program consists of several components: a website serving as a resource to those interested in state politics; a repository of data collected by political scientists and practitioners studying state politics; an archive collection donated to the program by Douglas Harlan; and outreach to and training of newly elected local and state officials. The archive contains campaign materials for state offices and other state documents on state institutions and laws.

The Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC)

The Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) is a research partnership between Rice University and the Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest district in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States. HERC brings together education researchers and education decision makers to work to ensure that all children have access to a high quality education, regardless of their economic status or where they live. HERC’s research agenda is informed by the needs of local education leaders, and the decisions of these leaders are informed by the research produced by HERC and its affiliates.

Hobby Center for the Study of Texas

The Hobby Center for the Study of Texas is an independent and objective source for the completion of research and education projects and programs focused on major issues impacting Texas and the Nation both now and in the future. The center seeks to advance understanding of the causes and consequences of demographic, economic, geographic, social, and environmental conditions impacting the current conditions in, and future of, Texas and other areas in the Nation.

Social Sciences Research Institute

The Social Sciences Research Institute is a research funding entity for Rice social sciences faculty and graduate students. It provides seed funds and other awards to promote cutting-edge research in the social sciences. "Thinking New and Thinking Big" is the Institute's mission. The Religion and Public Life Program is housed in the institute.

Shell Center for Sustainability

The Shell Center creates an interdisciplinary program of research, outreach and education to address actions that can be taken to ensure the sustainable development of living standards, interpreted broadly, to encompass all factors affecting the quality of life including environmental resources.  It supports the efforts of Rice University's faculty, staff and students to better our planet's economy, society and environment.
