Rice University’s Psychological Sciences Department has experienced substantial growth in recent years with the addition of multiple renowned tenured and tenure-track faculty, signaling a need for more physical space in the department’s home in Sewall Hall. When Serafim Hall opened last year, the Department of Art relocated from Sewall Hall, and a stretch of the fourth floor on the north part of the building was made available for psychological sciences.
Planning for the redesign of the space began in the fall of 2025. Remodeling efforts kicked off during winter break and recently were completed during the summer of 2026.
The newly redesigned and freshly furnished space includes four offices for senior faculty hires, two lab spaces, four classrooms, and a grand open area, which consists of a lounge space for students, cubicles, desks, and a kitchenette. Large windows facing either the academic quad or a courtyard area off College Way adorn all rooms. Additionally, the wing, which previously had only one bathroom, now contains two gender neutral bathrooms.
“We are so excited to offer our faculty and graduate students this amazing space. The windows, the light, and the art create an amazing atmosphere that will facilitate and energize new ideas and pathbreaking research. We are so grateful to be on Rice’s beautiful campus and for those who transformed the space,” said Margaret Beier, department chair and Autrey Professor of Psychological Sciences. “We look forward to welcoming our community here this fall.”
