New academic year, new faculty: Research Relays fall series kicks off September 22 featuring research from new social sciences scholars

Over the past several years, the School of Social Sciences has hosted numerous Research Relays, which are events that feature faculty research presented in a “lightning talk” format. These talks serve to introduce the Rice community to emerging research in the social sciences, spark new ideas, and stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations.

“The Research Relays have become a valued mainstay of the School of Social Sciences,” said Rachel Kimbro, dean of the School of Social Sciences. “These dynamic events engage and educate the Rice community about our faculty’s cutting-edge research, fostering natural partnerships in academic inquiry.”

This fall, the first Research Relay will be held on September 22 and will feature four of the School of Social Sciences’ nine new faculty members:

  • Taylor J. Damann, assistant professor of political science, whose research investigates how citizens’ attitudes and behaviors in conflict contexts are shaped by exposure to violence, societal narratives about outgroups, and gender dynamics;
  • Bryce McCleary, assistant professor of linguistics, whose recent research tracks the ways that linguistic innovations spread from one community to another and how social media and popular culture play a role in its spread to other communities more broadly;
  • Guillermo Rosas, Lena Gohlman Fox Professor of Political Science and department chair of political science, who will present research from his recent co-authored book, on the effects of electoral institutions on political behavior of politicians within political parties, and of political parties within party systems; and
  • Erin Standen, assistant professor of psychological sciences, whose research centers on health promotion and stigma reduction, particularly in the areas of eating, physical activity, and weight.

“We are pleased to introduce these new faculty at the upcoming Research Relay,” said Pat DeLucia, associate dean for research for the School of Social Sciences. “Their fresh and innovative scholarship will continue to raise the standard for research in the social sciences and contribute to society in meaningful ways.”

Research Relays: New Social Sciences Faculty will be held on September 22 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm in Kraft Hall 130. Lunch will be provided, and attendees are kindly asked to RSVP. For questions, contact Pat.DeLucia@rice.edu.
