Ralph O’Connor Professor of Economics, Hülya Eraslan, will begin a three-year term as associate editor of Econometrica starting this July. The prestigious appointment, according to the Econometrica editorial board, is a result of Eraslan’s highly regarded research and the exceptional quality of reports she has written for the journal.
Eraslan focuses her research on political economy, with a particular interest in group decision-making through bargaining negotiations and voting. A faculty member in her eleventh year at Rice, Eraslan served as director of graduate studies for eight years and has been an integral part of the growth of the economics department.
“When I was the director of graduate studies, every single assistant professor we hired had published their job market papers in top five journals, which is truly remarkable,” Eraslan said. “And our students are being placed in excellent academic positions and getting great jobs as well.”
No stranger to serving on journal editorial boards, Eraslan holds positions with five other journals. In each of her appointments, the main editor of the journal reached out to Eraslan and invited her to join the editorial board. Econometrica, a general interest journal, is widely regarded as one of the top scientific journals in the field of economics.
“The best academic articles are published in Econometrica, so I will have the privilege of reviewing the best pieces of work in the profession,” said Eraslan.
The select group of past associate editors includes Nobel Prize winners, rising scholars, and other renowned economists. Associate editors perform an important function at Econometrica, serving as the journal’s most trusted reviewers. The associate editors receive manuscripts that are submitted for publication and write 12-14 reports per year, playing a crucial role in deciding what research will be published.
“My goal is to provide high quality comments and feedback to the authors, especially if they are younger scholars who don't have much experience in the publication business,” said Eraslan.
The fact that Eraslan has received this momentous appointment comes as no surprise to her colleagues.
“We are extremely proud of Hülya’s appointment as associate editor of Econometrica,” said Flávio Cunha, Director of the Center for Economic Mobility, Ervin K. Zingler Chair of Economics, and Department Chair, Economics. “She is a brilliant economist who regularly gives back to the field, and the journal will continue to thrive with the addition of her keen insights and valuable expertise.
