Having recently welcomed 10 new faculty members – its largest cohort to date – the School of Social Sciences is excited to showcase new faculty research at the opening Research Relay on September 23. Research Relays enable faculty to share their innovative new research in an informal setting.
“I am delighted to welcome this stellar crop of new faculty to Rice,” said Rachel Kimbro, dean of the School of Social Sciences.
Event attendees can expect to hear from five new faculty members as they give four-minute flash talks about their burgeoning research, followed by time to connect with one another, allowing for faculty to discuss and potentially collaborate on new research. The September relay will include talks from the following social sciences faculty members:
- Rebecca Brossoit, assistant professor of psychological sciences, whose applied research centers on employee sleep, workplace interventions, and the influence of the built and natural environment on employees;
- Khadene Harris, assistant professor of anthropology, whose research focuses on the transition from slavery to freedom on the island of Dominica, where she studies the economic and social networks of the laboring class in the wake of such a considerable shift;
- Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman, associate professor of sociology and the Center for African and African American Studies, whose research centers on the emotional mechanisms of oppression in the context of family and work in African Diasporic communities;
- Jaleh Jalili, assistant professor of sociology, whose research focuses on urban sociology, social movements, space and place, cultural sociology, gender, and inequality; and
- Rithika Kumar, assistant professor of political science, who explores how development processes transform patterns of local political engagement by mediating the relationship between the private and the public, lying at the intersection of gender, urbanization, and politics with a regional specialization in South Asia, specifically India.
“I look forward to hearing about research addressing critical societal issues from faculty who are working on the cutting edge of the field,” said Pat DeLucia, associate dean for research for the School of Social Sciences.
Research Relays: New Faculty Research will take place on Monday, September 23 from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm in Kraft Hall 130. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP if you plan to attend. For questions, contact Pat DeLucia at Pat.DeLucia@rice.edu.
